Home Remedy For Razor Burn

People who shave on a regular basis often experience razor burn. The most common cause of minor skin irritation is a dull razor. When a dull razor is used, people often press too hard and produce a rash that appears a few minutes after shaving. Because they shave more often and facial skin is sensitive, men are far more likely to complain of razor burn than women.

What can men do to prevent razor burn? The first and most important step is to get a sharper razor or to simply change the disposable blade. On occasion, men do not use enough shaving cream on their faces. A lack of lubrication can cause razor burn as well as nicks and scratches.

Dry shaving is almost always a mistake. Some men do it because they claim they don’t have time for a proper shave. But even men who do not have sensitive skin can get razor burn when they shave without shaving cream.

Sometimes men simply do not know how to shave. Perhaps their fathers never showed them how. When they shave against the grain, they may get razor burn. An inexperienced shaver should always be sure to shave in the direction of the hair growth and to not press too hard. A sharp razor requires minimal pressure.

Once razor burn appears, it may take time to heal. The following is a brief list with descriptions of common home remedies for razor burn.

Avoid Irritating Products:

Most men rush through their morning routine. They shower, shave, and get dressed in a trice. But when your skin becomes irritated it important to avoid products that might exacerbate the rash. Colognes, perfumes, and certain types of aftershave can cause pain and further discomfort. Emollients and moisturizers with aloe vera can and often will irritate newly shaved skin.

Prepare for Shaving:

Some men have very sensitive skin. Even when they shave correctly with a sharp razor they will get razor burn. These men actually have to prepare for shaving. A washcloth soaked in warm water can help soften the hair before it is shaved. Facial washes the contain salicylic acid should also be used to remove dead skin and oils. Because they have less experience and their skin is often more sensitive, younger men often need to prepare to shave.

Apple Cider Vinegar:

If the razor burn is severe, apple cider vinegar can be used as an effective and affordable antiseptic. Though men are less likely to use simple home remedies than women, this razor burn treatment is quite popular with guys that get razor burn on a regular basis. Not only does it fight bacteria and inflammation, but apple cider vinegar is also quite refreshing.

Strawberries:

It might seem a little fruity (pun intended), but strawberries can be used as a natural and fragrant antiseptic. Another great razor burn treatment, when applied directly to the skin, they can help close the pores and prevent further irritation. Simply mash up a few strawberries and mix them with a tablespoon of sour cream.  The affected area should be gently cleansed after five or ten minutes.
